Catherine Housholder is working at IAVA and her mentor is Norma Diaz

Getting Ready for Speech helps students acquire the language and presentation skills necessary to confidently give speeches.
Language Teaching Approach:
This beginning level text walks students step by step through the speech making and giving process. English Workshop in Montevideo
PAD Mentor Program Set to Start in mid-August
Thirty English teachers from throughout the country gathered in Montevideo for a two day workshop July 29th and 30th. These teachers are candidates for the new mentor program that will support high school English teachers in each department. The program will create one or two PAD (Profesor Articulador Departamental) positions in each department. The PAD teachers will work directly with Shirley Romano, the Inspectora de Inglés, as well as high school English teachers in their respective departments. English Teachers Receive New Books
Public Affairs Officer Robert Zimmerman and Cultural Affairs Specialist Verónica Perez-Urioste from the USA Embassy in Montevideo distributed new textbooks for each high school during a recent English workshop. The new books will help teachers develop and implement discussions and debates with their 5th and 6th year students. The new titles are: Discover Debate, Discussion, and Getting Ready for Speech.

The talks focused on discussion circles as a way to teach as well as the importance of dialogue and inquiry in the language classroom.

Ms. Gardner has 8 years of experience teaching English to speakers of other languages in the state of Colorado. Peer Mentors for English Teachers
Despite the fact that collaboration has been shown to improve instruction among educators, teachers often work in isolation. The lack of sufficent time and the distances between teachers has made collaboration difficult among English teachers in Uruguay. Peer mentoring programs provide a solution to this problem. Experienced teachers are given the opportunity to visit and work with their peers. In doing this, they are able to give other teachers regular support in the classroom. Me alegra comunicarles que se ha lanzado nuevamente el programa Jóvenes Embajadores 09.
Este programa de intercambio auspiciado por la Embajada de los Estados Unidos, otorga 8 becas para estudiantes de liceos públicos o UTU de entre 15 y 18 años para viajar a EE.UU. por dos semanas con todos los gastos pagos representando al Uruguay.
